Unit 25. Reporting with passive verbs; it is said that.

A.

우리는 때떄로 사람들이 어떤 생각을 하는지 어떻게 말을 하는지 보고하는 형식에 수동형을 쓴다. 이때 보고되는 사람을 언급하는게 중요하지 않은 상황이면 이 형태를 쓴다.

People in the area have been told that they should stay indoors. 

B.

또 다르게 보고형식으로 흔하게 쓰이는 방법은 사람들의 그룹이 명확하지 않은 그룹에 의해 말해질 떄 
it + 수동형동사 + that 절로 쓴다.
이때 이 패턴에선 중요한 정보는 문장의 말미에 가 있다.

The damage is extensive, according to government sources. (능동형)

It is reported that the damage is extensive (수동형, 중요한 내용은 뒤에)

이렇게 쓰는 동사의 예로 allege, announce, assume, believe, calculate, claim, consider, demonstrate, discover, establish, estimate, expect, feel, find, know, mention, recommend, reveal, say, show, suggest, suppose, think, understand가 있으며 추가로 agree, decide, hope, intend, plan, propose 들 또한 to 부정사 절을 받으며 사용될 수 있다.

이외의 동사들이 보고서 형식으로 될때 it + 수동형 동사+ that절로 안쓰이는데. 이때 encourage, inform, persuade, reassure, remind, tell, warn 등이 있으며 A. 처럼 쓰여진다. 

이런 동사들은 능동형 that 절 이전에 목적격 인칭 대명사가 와야 한다.

C.

it + 수동형 동사 + that 절 을 대신해서 it + 수동형 동사 + that 절 를 쓸 수 있는데 이때 주어가 문장의 주제가 된다.

It is reported that the damage is extensive  (it + 수동형 동사 + that 절) 

The damage is reported to be extensive (it + 수동형 동사 + that 절)

B. 에서 명시된 대다수의 동사또한 이런 형식으로 쓸 수 있는데 announce, decide, mention, propose, recommend, suggest는 예외다.

동사 tell은 명령(order)의 의미로 쓸때만 이 패턴을 쓸 수 있다.

D.

동사 discover, establish, explain, find, know, reveal, show, understand들은 또한 it + 수동형동사 + WH절 로 정보의 주고 받음을 나타낼 수 있다.

It has now been revealed who was responsible for the accident.

E.

that 절을 받는 that + there 로 이어지는 문장등은 there + 수동형 동사 + to be/ to have been등의 의미가 일치하는 또 다른 수동형으로 만들 수 있는데 

It is thought (that) there are too many obstacles to peace.

There are thought to be too many obstacles to peace.

두개의 문장처럼 다른 형식이나 완전히 같은 의미로 해석 될 수 있도록 만드는 예시다.

앞서 C에서 말한 동사들처럼 주어 + 수동형동사 + to 부정사로 쓰이는 동사들 또한 이 패턴을 사용할 수 있다.
