Unit 22. Forming passive sentences(1)

A.

동사 Give 와 같이 직접 목적어, 간접목적어 두개 다 받을 수 있는 경우에 두가지 패턴.

●동사+ 간접목적어 + 직접 목적어. V + IO + DO 또는 동사+ 전치사 + 간접목적어 V + preposition + IO

능동형	수동형
Alice gave us that vase.	We were given that vase (by Alice).
Alice gave that vase to us	That vase was given (to) us (by Alice).

여기서 수동태의 형은 문맥에 어떤게 더 잘어울리는가에 따라서 결정 되는데 행위자(능동형 동사의 주어)를 특정시 할때는 문장 끝을 by절로 받는다. 

비형식적인 글에선 (to) 를 생략할 수 있다.

이런 경우를 나타내는 동사의 예시

giving의 의미로써 award, hand, lend, offer, throw.

telling의 의미로써 ask, read, teach. 

● 간접목적어+ 직접목적어가 아니라 하나의 목적어만 받는 경우.  동사 + 직접목적어 + 전치사 + 간접 목적어.(V+ DO+ prep+ IO

능동형	수동형
He explained the problem to me.	The problem was explained by him

어떤걸 말했거나 생각했던경우를 보고하는 형식의 동사에서 많이 쓰이며 이런 동사들은

Announce, demonstrate, describe, introduce, mention, propose, report, suggest 들이 있다.

B.

동사가 목적어 + 보어를 받는 경우는 하나의 형태밖에 없다.

능동형. 동사 + 목적어 + 보어	수동형
They elected her president	She was elected president.

보통 이런경우는 누군가에게 특정한 자리를 줄 경우가 많다. 이런 동사들은

appoint, declare, make, nominate, vote.

naming 의 의미로 call, name, title

가 있다.  

C.

동사가 목적어 + 원형부정사 를 받는 경우. 이런경우에 수동형에선 원형부정사를 to 부정사로 받는다.

능동형. 동사 + 목적어 + 원형부정사	수동형
They have made him return the money.	He has been made to return the money.

이런 동사들은

fell, hear, help(능동형에서 to부정사 받을 수있음), observe, see 등이 있다.

D.

 두 단어 또는 세 단어로 이루어지는 타동사도 수동형으로 만들 수 있다.

능동형	수동형
Kathy looks after him	he is looked after (by Kathy.)
They put the accident down to bad luck.	The accident was put down to bad luck.

이런 예로

Carry out( put into practice), disapprove of, hold over(delay), talk down to(patronise) 등이 있다.

그러나 어떤 타동사들은 수동태형으로 변환 할 수가 없는데 이런 예로

brush up on(revise), cast back(try to remember), come up against(encounter), get (something) down (write), take after(resemble)

또는 주어를 언급하는게 중요하지가 않을 경우에 수동형으로 나타낼 때도 있다.

call (someone) up , call (someone) back, let in, let out, put out 등이 있다.

예시 : I put out a hand to steady myself. 수동형 변환 안됨( 주어가 중요) 

        They put out the fire  --> The fire was put out (주어는 중요하지 않음)
